Yuya Suzuki (b. Japan) bases his creations on observing urban environments, focusing on the leftovers in contemporary urban spaces, or elements that are suppressed and excluded in a consumer society. These primarily include the waste produced by consumer life, shapes created by the activities of the residents, and objects or forms that become worn out and change over time in urban life. These elements, which originally had functions and meanings within the urban environment, are gradually transformed, weathered, repurposed, and eventually excluded as unnecessary under various external pressures within the urban environment. He observes these objects and the phenomena surrounding them in the urban environment as the "urban unconscious”, then translates this unconscious realm latent in the real world using his unique visual language.
In recent work, he has been abstracting the "urban unconscious" elements that shape our urban environment on an unconscious level through the drawing process. He has practiced the drawing series "archegraphs" in various cities around the world, extracting unique symbolic images.At the same time, it is an exploration of archetypes—images that resonate with the collective unconscious of humanity, transcending differences in countries, cultural spheres, and eras.
Ultimately, the artist transforms these "archegraph" images into various media, such as sculptures, videos, murals, kinetic works, and light sculptures, to create installations. The images extracted from the unconscious elements of the city are returned to reality through the production process, uniquely simulating the collective unconscious realm latent in the real world.
